How The Welding Process Is Continuing To Evolve
Welding process and techniques have evolved constantly since the earliest days of the Industrial Revolution, when technological advances and the introduction of new fuels meant that traditional forge welding could be improved upon. For centuries, iron parts had been welded together by blacksmiths in what was known as an iron forge. This was accomplished by heating the metal to an extremely hot temperature, and then working it with constant hammering. Modern welding techniques are very different from this because they are able to use fuel to exacerbate the process.
Welding is defined as the direct joining of metal parts, achieved by the melting of these parts as opposed to the introduction of a third party material. This is what distinguishes it from soldering, which involves the use of a soft metal as a joiner. The soft metal is heated and made molten, but the pieces of metal to be joined remain unaltered. It is possible to introduce a third party into a welding process, but the key factor is that the nature of the metal parts to be joined must be temporarily altered.
Types of welding process developed quickly from those early days, as the availability of new fuel opened up the possibility of dramatic technical advancement. There were new techniques developed during the early years of the twentieth century, many of them as a direct result of being at war and the need to produce metal parts and equipment as quickly as possible. When the world was at peace again, these same techniques could be taken into the commercial workplace. Further development occurred during the Second World War, and the basic welding techniques used today were initiated during that period like underwater welding process. This list includes the mig welding process which dominates the market today. Also tig welding process which is also readily available. All of which include a gas welding process
The future of welding is going to be very different from anything we have yet seen. There is no doubt that robotics is going to play an increasingly important part in the welding process of the future, because it is already being integrated into the workplace of today. Welding is inherently a dangerous process, so the more a skilled worker can be taken away from the immediate vicinity, the less the likelihood of injury occurring. Skilled operatives will still be needed to set up the machines and oversee the operation, but the entire process will be much safer.
The welding process is about to undergo its most significant change since the start of the Industrial Revolution, and we can see the first evidence of this in factories right now. If you are interested in learning how the development of robotic technology is going to impact the future, the Internet has many research resources. Anyone interested in pursuing a career in welding will need to gain this background knowledge because this is the environment which will be prevalent in the future, as robots are integrated into the welding process.
